CHS Book Week

Why don't we remember those with whom we share the Earth? And why won't we honour and value their true worth? We can't let our best friends simply vanish without trace, so let's work together and restore their rightful place.

 Martin Kiszko, Green Poet

Our Nursery - Year 6 boys and girls have enjoyed a week of activities for our 'One World' themed CHS Book Week. We only have one world and it is precious; this environmental topic ran through the week in classes, assemblies and other activities.

Book Week began with 'Dress Up Day', where pupils and staff dressed up in eco themed outfits. There were a range of characters including  eco 'warriors', endangered animals, top 'recyclers' and many more. The children enjoyed an eco poetry reading in assembly and donated some of their unwanted books to Better World Books. The books will be sold by Better World Books, who redistribute books to promote both literacy and recycling, and the proceeds will be shared between Clifton High School and a nominated literacy charity. Find out more about them here.

A number of poetry and design competitions ran over the week. Exciting prizes included an author visit from Liz Pichon to the artist who drew the best monster, book tokens plus the opportunity to see a book token design become reality for next year's World Book Day, and a multitude of different prizes to the author of the best Fairtrade themed poem. Good luck to everyone who has entered the competitions!

The children also enjoy writing poems and stories during lessons, browsing and purchasing books at the Scholastic Book Fair and a visit from Sean Taylor to conclude the week. Sean read to the Nursery School children and they composed poems with him, he ran reading and writing workshops with the Reception children, ran creative workshops with Years 1-2, delivered an assembly to Years 3-6 and even stayed after school finished to do a book signing!

An enjoyable week was had by all and we are very much looking forward to next year. Thank you to the School Librarian Mrs Cuthill for organising such an exciting week for all of the Early Years and Junior School children.
