All international students whose parents do not live in the UK are required to have a suitable UK guardian.

The role of the UK guardian is:

  • to act 'in loco parentis' - that is, in place of the student’s parents and with their authority - in the event of any day-to-day issues that arise during the student’s stay, or in a crisis or emergency. This could be if a student is taken ill or has an accident.
  • to make travel arrangements and look after the student during all school holidays, in consultation with their parents.
  • to make all necessary arrangements if the student is suspended or expelled from School.

A guardian must be:

  • over 25 years of age
  • resident in the UK
  • live in a fixed abode

They can be:

  • a family member
  • a family friend
  • a recognised guardian

A guardian cannot be in a relationship with the international student nor can they be a full-time student themselves.

If we think a guardian is unsuitable, we will ask parents to arrange a new one, but they should not terminate an agreement with a guardian before finding an alternative. Please note that we cannot recommend or arrange a guardian for you.

Clifton High School must receive full contact details of the guardian, together with a copy of a signed agreement between parents and guardian.
