Scholars' Forum with Mr Tom Bodkin - Adventure and Entrepreneurship

Clifton High welcomed Mr Tom Bodkin at a Scholars’ Forum, to talk about his exciting career. Mr Bodkin spoke to pupils about his six-year career in the army, where he spent time as a Platoon Commander, in charge of a group of thirty people from the age of 24. After leaving the army, Mr Bodkin wanted to move away from such a structured environment and consequently decided to set up Secret Compass, an adventure travel business. As part of his business, he has been involved in many projects, including making television shows for the BBC and running rafting, mountain biking and trekking expeditions in a wide variety of countries such as Egypt, Rwanda and Sudan. Mr Bodkin explained that one of the most exciting projects he has been involved in was the Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig - a music concert on icebergs!

Mr Bodkin also spoke to pupils about the highs and lows of running his own business, he explained that on the one hand, you are responsible for the failures but equally the successes are also yours.  Finally, he offered some general advice to pupils on selecting a career path, his main message being to do what you enjoy and to make the most of all the opportunities that come your way!
