Mathematics Masterclass to Westbury on Trym CofE Academy

Sixth Form Mathematics students Jasmine, William, Elenor and Hongliang accompanied Mr Collins and Miss Lyons (Mathematics) and Mr Collins (PE) for Clifton High School’s recent ‘Masterclass on the Move’ to Westbury-On-Trym, to deliver a workshop on  the optical illusion of tangrams.  Composed of multiple different-sized shapes, tangrams can be fitted together to form a larger shape. In this case it was the shapes ‘WOTY5’ representing ‘Westbury-On-Trym Year 5’. The children stuck these shapes on pieces of wire of varying heights and distances apart so that the word could only be seen from one angle.

All groups were successful in completing their given tangram in the allocated time. On completing their activity, pupils were stretched to explore ‘new’ shapes such as a ‘parallelogram’ and the types of angles these have, as well as some of the Year 5 children discovering  that angles in a triangle always add up to 180 degrees. Thank you to Westbury-on-Trym for welcoming us and to the Mathematics Department for organising another enriching ‘Masterclass on the Move’ experience. Elenor in Year 12 commented “all of the children seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day and were able to go home with lots of newly-acquired wisdom!”

Campcraft Masterclass on the Move to Charborough Road Primary School

Equipped with stoves, hot chocolates and tents, five Gold Duke of Edinburgh students accompanied Mr Shelswell and Mr Cowper on their recent Masterclass on the Move excursion to Charborough Road Primary joining Clifton High School students and teachers on the Charborough school field. After a safety briefing, the group was divided into two and the activities commenced with Trangia gas stove training and instructions on how to make the perfect hot chocolate safely. Charborough school guides and brownies who had camped before enjoyed taking responsibility and assist those who had no camping experience. Thanks to excellent team skills, tents were successfully erected, despite the slightly difficult design of the ‘Vango’ model! Thank you to Charborough Road School for welcoming us and to Clifton High teachers with students Hannah, Sophie, Jack, Harry and Ben.
